Screens that only look like work

The rest is usually a paper task wearing a login screen. A PDF opened on a tablet, a quiz that could have been three questions on the board, a video the class watches together at a fixed speed. None of these are harmful. They are simply not worth the setup time, the charging trolley, or the argument with parents that follows.

Where AI changes the calculation

Most of the anxiety about AI in schools imagines a student at a screen. In practice, the largest use is a teacher at one, before the lesson starts. Generating a differentiated worksheet, building a quiz from a text, or drafting a lesson plan aligned to the curriculum happens in the planning period and often ends at the printer.

That distinction matters for policy. A school can adopt AI for worksheet generation and lesson planning without adding a single minute to any student's screen time. The teacher's preparation time drops; the classroom looks exactly as it did before.
