What should a child do all day when they can't go to school?

12,030. That is how many Danish public-school pupils missed more than 50 school days in 2024/25, on average 80 of the year's 200 days (Børns Vilkår, reported by DR, 7 May 2026). Search for "child not in school what to do all day" and you get plenty on why a kid cannot get through the school gate, and almost nothing on what the hours between 9:00 and 15:00 should contain. Eighty days is a long time to guess.
Every guide says keep a routine, none says what the routine is
The advice is consistent. YoungMinds (reviewed December 2025) says "keep a learning routine going at home" and stop for lunch at school time. Cambridgeshire County Council's EBSA parent guidance (March 2024) says "set aside clear time for learning within the usual school hours" and limit gaming and TV in those hours. The Department for Education in England (February 2023) says a prolonged absence "may heighten their anxiety about attending in future" and that schools should consider remote education so the pupil stays on track.
All three are right. None of them says what a kid should be doing at 9:30 on a Tuesday, or how the work on the kitchen table connects to what the class is doing without them. After that, parents are on their own.
Why low demand and predictability matter
We talk about the home day as if it is a screen problem, a discipline problem or a parenting problem. It is a load problem.
Cambridgeshire's guidance uses the push and pull model found in most English EBSA guidance. School pushes: noise, a friendship that broke, a test the kid expects to fail. Home pulls: safety, a parent in the next room, no demands. An unstructured day with unlimited screens makes the pull stronger and does nothing about the push. A day with a small, predictable amount of learning keeps home safe while it shrinks the gap between home and school.
The other half is burnout. Raymaker and colleagues (Autism in Adulthood, 2020) describe autistic burnout as chronic exhaustion, loss of skills and reduced tolerance to stimulus, arising when "expectations outweigh abilities". Their participants were adults, so for kids the evidence is indirect. But the recovery factors they found, time off, reduced expectations, acceptance and doing things their own way, are exactly what a low-demand day provides.
In 2023 I was teaching in a special needs class in Denmark. Every teacher in a class like that knows these kids. A kid who could explain the offside rule in three languages but could not open a maths book. A kid who read two years ahead and hid under the table when the bell rang. A kid who came in on Monday and was gone by Wednesday for a month. Not "will not". Cannot. For those kids, "just do a worksheet" fails because the tank is empty, not because the worksheet is hard.
Predictability is what makes a demand bearable. A block that lasts 25 minutes, ends with a timer and is followed by something the kid chose is bounded, and a bounded demand is far easier to accept than an open one.

Child not in school: what to do all day, hour by hour
A template, not a prescription. The fixed points: two learning blocks, lunch at school time, an outdoor slot, no recreational screens before 15:00.
9:00 to 9:30, the day starts when school starts
Up, dressed, breakfast, and a two-minute look at the day's plan on paper, next to the bowl, so the day has a beginning.
9:30 to 9:55, learning block one
Twenty-five minutes on one thing the class is doing this week, built on the kid's interest. Class on fractions, kid lives for football: the fractions are match statistics, pitch dimensions, a squad list. Class reading a novel: the kid listens to a chapter and talks about it for five minutes. Visible timer. When it rings, stop.
9:55 to 10:30, movement
Not exercise. A walk to the shop, the trampoline, a bike ride round the block, the dog. A body that has sat still with anxiety needs to move before it can concentrate again.
10:30 to 10:55, learning block two
A different subject, same rules: one objective from the class's week, interest-led, timer, hard stop. Two blocks are enough.
10:55 to 12:00, rest the kid controls
Drawing, Lego, a book, an audiobook, music, cooking with a parent. Screen-free on purpose: this is the block a screen would swallow, and the rest of the day with it.
12:00 to 12:45, lunch at school time
Eating when the class eats keeps the body on a school clock.
12:45 to 13:45, outdoors
A longer slot outside, ideally with other people in it: a park, the library, the pool. For a kid who has stopped leaving the house, the walk is the goal and the length is negotiable.
13:45 to 14:30, a project with a product
Bake, build, repair, plant, make a poster or a 60-second voice recording about the morning's topic. Many kids show what they know here.
14:30 to 14:45, check-in with school
Two lines from the parent to the class teacher, a photo of the project, or, when the kid is ready, a five-minute call with one familiar adult. Same time every day, so it is not an event.
15:00, screens
Screens, if the family allows them, from the moment the school day would have ended. Same rule as for a kid who went to school.
How to ask the school for the week's objectives
The two blocks only work if they connect to the class. That takes one thing from the school: the week's objectives, one sentence per subject, sent on Friday for the week ahead. "Maths: adding fractions with different denominators. Reading: chapter four of the class novel, why the main character lies." Most teachers already have this in a weekly plan, and many Danish schools post a weekly plan on the school's parent platform (Aula). In England the DfE's 2023 summary says schools should consider remote education so the pupil stays on track. I think one sentence per subject is the least a school owes a kid it cannot yet get through the door.
What a parent can do
- Write tomorrow's plan on paper tonight, with times, and put it by the breakfast bowl. Two blocks of 25 minutes, nothing longer. About 5 minutes an evening.
- Ask the class teacher for one sentence of objectives per subject every Friday, and offer a daily photo of the work in return. One email, about 15 minutes to write, then nothing.
- Pick one interest and use it for both blocks all week. Football, horses, Minecraft, dinosaurs. The subject changes, the interest does not. About 10 minutes on Sunday to turn each objective into a task.
- Hold the screen rule at 15:00 and explain it once, as the same rule as a school day. Do not renegotiate in the moment. Zero minutes, and the hardest step.
- Cut the block, not the routine. On a bad day block one becomes 10 minutes. It still starts at 9:30 and the timer still rings.
- Keep the check-in tiny and daily. One message, one photo, one familiar teacher, same time. About 2 minutes a day.
Three things to take away:

- Movement, rest and an outdoor hour are not a reward for learning. They are what makes learning possible.
- At home the school day also ends at 15:00, and that is when screens start.

A simple rule that is easy to explain is screens from 15:00, the same as for a kid who went to school. Rest blocks earlier in the day should be screen-free.
Why does a child with school avoidance need low demand and predictability?
Because pressure is what they are avoiding. Most EBSA guidance uses a push and pull model: factors at school push the kid away, factors at home pull them in. Research on autistic burnout (Raymaker et al., Autism in Adulthood, 2020) found recovery came from reduced expectations, time off and acceptance. A day with a known shape and a small, bounded learning load lowers the demand while keeping the kid connected to school.
