What is the national curriculum in England?
The national curriculum sets out the programmes of study that maintained schools in England must teach at key stages 1 to 4, from Year 1 to Year 11. Published by the Department for Education, it lists the statutory requirements for each subject: English, mathematics and science across all four key stages, plus subjects such as history, geography and computing.
GradeAid includes 2,619 requirements across 12 subjects, organised by year group, key stage and strand, from place value in Year 3 to Medieval Britain at key stage 3. You choose them when you plan, and GradeAid keeps track of which ones your class has covered across the year.

National curriculum questions
Yes. GradeAid uses the current programmes of study published by the Department for Education on GOV.UK. We last checked them in June 2026, and we update GradeAid when the curriculum changes, including changes that follow the Curriculum and Assessment Review.
Key stages 1 to 4, Year 1 to Year 11, across 12 subjects: English, mathematics, science, computing, geography, history, languages, design and technology, art and design, music, physical education and citizenship.
Yes. Academies and independent schools don't have to follow the national curriculum, but most plan from it or close to it. You pick the requirements you teach and can add your own objectives on top.
GradeAid also includes Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence and the SQA National Qualifications, the Curriculum for Wales and the Northern Ireland Curriculum, so teachers anywhere in the UK can plan from their own framework.
Individual teachers can start free, with no card needed. Planning directly from the national curriculum is part of the Pro plan, and schools and trusts can get a school-wide licence.
GradeAid stores data in the EU (Google Cloud, Belgium) and never trains AI on teachers' uploads or pupils' work. Pupils don't chat with the AI: it's a planning tool for teachers. Schools can sign a data processing agreement.
