Geometric BBQ
Build lines, angles and shapes with skewers.
I can build and name parallel and perpendicular lines, angles, triangles and squares.
A math video lesson with a free worksheet and answer key for teachers
About the video
In the video skewers are used to build lines, angles and shapes. At home 2 to 4 players and a caller each get 6 skewers with the points cut off and 6 clay balls, and build 7 calls, from parallel lines to a square. Parallel lines never meet, and perpendicular lines cross at a right angle of 90 degrees. An acute angle is smaller than 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is between 90 and 180 degrees, and a triangle of 3 equal skewers has three 60 degree angles.
What your child learns
- Build and name parallel and perpendicular lines
- Tell acute, right and obtuse angles apart
- Count sides and right angles in triangles and squares
What's on the worksheet
- 1Predict first
- 2Record your shapes
- 3What did you see?
- 4The math behind it
- 5Match the words
- 6Sort the angles
- 7True or false
- 8Measure the shapes
- 9Draw and label
You need
1 caller and 2 to 4 players. Each player has 6 wooden skewers, 20 cm long, and 6 small balls of modelling clay (about 1.5 cm across) to join the ends.
Safety
Skewers have sharp points. Cut or cover the points first, never point a skewer at anyone, and do not run with skewers.
Tip for the adult
The adult cuts off or covers every skewer point before play starts, and checks each right angle with the corner of a book.
